  1. Open McAfee.
  2. Click the Updates option on the top right corner.
  3. When a new window pops up, click Configure.
  4. When a new window pops up, make sure you select the recommended option for installing updates. Click OK.
  5. To manually check for an update, click Check Now. It will check for updates.
  6. If updates are needed, press the button that says Update Now.
  7. This will take you to a website where you will enter your username ID and password.
  8. Follow the instructions to download and install the updates.

Scanning your system for viruses

McAfee should be set to scan your computer for any virus threats on a regular basis. Follow these steps to configure McAfee to run regular virus scans on your computer.

  1. Open McAfee.
  2. On the left, click the 'virusscan' option.
  3. Where it says 'I want to...', click and open the option that says 'Configure VirusScan Options'.
  4. A new window will open. Under the 'ActiveShield' tab, make sure all three settings are checked.
  5. Under the 'Scheduled Scan' tab, make sure the box is checked that says 'Scan My Computer at a scheduled time'.
  6. Click the edit button if you want to set your own time, or leave it at the default time.

McAfee VirusScan will scan My computer and look for any threats that may appear on your computer. Once it is done scanning, it will show a list of all the virus threats in the white box. To delete all the threats, check the box next to 'File Name' to select all the files. Click the delete button and follow the instructions to delete the threats.

McAfee may also detect a number of adware programs. Since it often has trouble removing them, it is better to use the standard spyware tools (Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc.)
