Symptoms

Spyware, also known as malware, is the generic term for unwanted programs, sometimes called adware. They technically aren't viruses. Spyware symptoms include popup ads, lots of icons in the notification area (systray), and computer slowdown.  You may also notice toolbars that you know nothing about appearing on your internet browser. If you notice your computer running slow, there's a good chance that it's infected.

This is an extreme case, but you get the idea.

Viruses on the other hand are destructive to your computer and should be removed immediately and can cause massive amounts of damage to your computer. Like biological viruses, they attach to the system and begin causing problems.
