Wireless in the Dorms

Students can set up their own wireless equipment in the dorms, with the following restrictions:

  • Since DormNet does not support wireless, we cannot offer assistance beyond our usual troubleshooting.
  • If any student's wireless equipment causes problems (e.g. a wireless router distributing IP addresses) it may be blocked. This can happen if you hook it up backwards.
  • The router should be configured to have the same MAC, Machine Address Code, as the computer it will connect to so the network thinks it's your computer and allows it on.
  • The wireless network should also be secured with an encryption scheme so that others don't use your connection or change your settings. In a dorm setting, many students would gladly jump on an unsecured wireless network, causing vulnerability in the system and slow down the internet access of the router due to increased traffic.
